JWST Spots Birthplaces of Early Black Holes
Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), astronomers have identified dense, metal-poor star clusters formed roughly 460 million years after the Big Bang that serve as ideal, natural incubators for intermediate-mass black holes. These newly observed dense clusters provide crucial evidence for how "heavy seeds" are manufactured in the early universe, solving a long-standing astrophysical puzzle regarding how these clusters can rapidly grow into the colossal supermassive black holes observed today.
